Question – Who is eligible to attend?
Answer: Selected special education students aged 14-22 attend Work Awareness and Job Coach. Any student selected by the school division can receive a vocational evaluation.
Question – How do I access the programs? Answer: Each student’s teacher should contact the Transition Specialist in the division to obtain information about being referred to these programs. Parents should talk to their child’s IEP Case Manager or the Lead Special Education Teacher in their child’s high school.
Question – Are there criteria for entry into the programs?
Answer: These programs are designed to serve students with a wide range of disabilities and abilities. Students are expected to be able to participate in job training for a two hour twenty minute period. Training and assessment programs are individualized to meet each student’s unique needs.
Question – How many credits can students earn? Answer: Students attend Work Awareness and Job Coach for the full Career and Technical period for 180 school days. Each division determines the number of credits the student can earn.
Question – How are the programs coordinated with the school divisions?
Answer: Each division has a Transition Specialist or Special Education Coordinator who serves as the link between the school division and the Transition Services Programs.
Each school division provides transportation to and from New Horizons. Students attend Work Awareness and Job Coach for 2:20 each school day. They attend their home high school for the remainder of the day. Vocational Evaluations take from 1-3 days to complete, some of which is done within the student’s home high school.
Question – Is their a cost for public school program and is their financial aide for adult education classes?
Answer: All New Horizons Centers serving public school students do so at not cost to parents, except for lab fees for certain CTE courses. The Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training does not offer financial aide. The Center will invoice businesses agreeing to pay for training; as well as receive check, money order and credit card from general public. We can also provide information regarding area programs and agencies that offer funding or loans.
